What is Consol Cargo? Avoid Confusing Consol with LCL

Many shippers often mistake "consol" and "LCL" as the same, but in reality, they are two different concepts. Both involve shipments that are not large enough to fill a full container, but LCL refers to the type of cargo, while consol refers to the method of cargo consolidation organized by a forwarder to optimize costs and transit time. Misunderstanding this can lead to choosing the wrong service, which affects delivery schedules and logistics costs. This article will help you understand and choose the right option!

Consolidation means the process of combining multiple LCL shipments into a larger consolidated shipment to be loaded in one container.

1. What is Consol? What is Consol Cargo?

“Consol” is short for Consolidation, which means the process of combining multiple LCL shipments into a larger consolidated shipment to be loaded in one container. This activity is performed by a professional consolidator or groupage operator.

Consolidators gather multiple small shipments that share similar characteristics (same route, destination port, cargo type, etc.) and combine them into a single container for international shipping.

Therefore, in the logistics industry, the term “consol” refers not only to the process of consolidation but also to the entities who provide this service. These can be NVOCCs (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers) – considered independent carriers without owning vessels.

2. How is Consol Cargo Handled?

To ship LCL cargo, shippers must deliver goods to consolidation points – called CFS (Container Freight Stations) – operated by the shipping line or the consolidator. At these stations, shipments with similar characteristics are grouped together and loaded into a shared container.

There are two scenarios:

  • If the consolidation and loading are done by the shipping line → the container is called an LCL container or LCL/LCL box.

  • If the consolidation is done by a consolidator → it is called a consol container or consol box.

In summary, consol cargo refers to multiple LCL shipments from different shippers, consolidated and loaded into a shared container by a consolidator. This is a common method in sea freight, allowing cost optimization and efficient service for SMEs with import-export needs but insufficient volume for full container load (FCL).

3. What is a Master Consolidator?

A Master Consolidator is a professional logistics provider who leases space (slots) and containers directly from carriers, then gathers LCL shipments from various sources – including small exporters and smaller forwarders – for international transportation.

Once cargo is received, the Master Consolidator arranges, categorizes, and packs the goods into a full container (FCL) and ships it to a transit port.

Their shipping process usually follows two forms:

a. Transshipment Consol (Transit Consolidation):

  • The container is unloaded at a transit port.

  • Here, goods are reclassified by destination and repacked into new containers depending on their final ports, continuing the journey.

b. Direct Consol (Direct Consolidation):

  • The container remains sealed throughout the journey.

  • Goods stay intact from the CFS loading point to the final destination port.

  • There may be feeder vessel changes, but the container itself is not opened.

4. Pros and Cons of Consol Cargo

4.1. Advantages

  • Cost and labor savings: The shipper doesn’t need to handle complicated and costly processes like getting an empty container, container inspection, hiring labor to load at a private warehouse, or transporting the container to the port. These steps are handled by the consolidator at the CFS.

  • Optimized shipping costs compared to FCL: With consol cargo, businesses only pay for the space or actual weight of their shipment in the container.

  • Increased flexibility: Consol is ideal for testing new suppliers or trial shipments due to its small volume and lower risk. It also allows importers/exporters to remain flexible in their inventory strategies, especially on irregular trade lanes.

4.2. Disadvantages

  • No Master Bill of Lading: With consol cargo, you only receive a House Bill issued by the consolidator, not a Master Bill from the shipping line.

  • Dependent on the consolidator: Choosing a reliable and experienced consolidator is crucial. Poor service may lead to scheduling issues, extra charges, or port delays.

  • Higher risk of damage or customs inspection than FCL: Consol cargo undergoes more handling and may be unpacked/repacked during transshipment.

  • Uncertain transit times: Consol services tend to have more flexible schedules than FCL and may lack precise ETAs due to consolidation volume, routing, and transshipment factors. Both shippers and consignees need to plan accordingly.
